NOT THEN, NOT NOW, NOT EVER!

Temporäre Kunst-Installation in Berlin

Am 8. Mai 2020, um 5 Uhr, hat Volker-Johannes Trieb vor dem Brandenburger Tor eine temporäre Kunst-Installation platziert: „White root“ aus seinem Zyklus „Not then, not now, not ever!“

Die Installation besteht aus der mit weißer Farbe besprayten Wurzel einer 211 Jahre alten Eiche, schwebend auf einem Stahlgestell, ergänzt um zwei Textbänder, 50 m und 18 m lang, mit roter Schrift auf weißem Grund.

Das 18 m lange Band trägt die Aufschrift: „Wir wollen noch einmal anfangen, an das Leben zu glauben.“, ein Zitat des Anti-Kriegs-Autors Erich Maria Remarque. Das 50 m lange Band trägt die Aufschrift: „Diese Wurzel soll weder eine Anklage noch ein Bekenntnis sein. Sie soll nur den Versuch machen, über eine Generation zu berichten, die vom Kriege zerstört wurde – auch wenn sie seinen Granaten entkam.“ Ein Zitat in Abwandlung der Vorrede des Remarque-Romans „Im Westen nichts Neues“.

Abgelegt wird die Wurzel in Erinnerung an den 8. Mai 1945, den „Tag der Befreiung“ vom Nationalsozialismus vor 75 Jahren. Die Erinnerung an diesen Tag fällt 2020 in die Zeit der weltweiten Covid-19-Krise. White root zeigt: Die Erinnerung an den „Tag der Befreiung“ und die Reaktion unserer Gesellschaft auf Corona weisen thematische Parallelen auf.

Eine Friedensmahnung.

Die Wurzel stammt von den Seelower Höhen - vom Schloßgut Alt Madlitz, wo sie im November 2019 geborgen wurde.

Die Eiche stand auf dem Gefechtsfeld der Schlacht um die Seelower Höhen im April 1945, dem Auftakt des finalen Vormarschs der Roten Armee auf Berlin. Sie ist ein Zeitzeuge, geschossverwundet. Hätte sie eine Stimme, sie könnte berichten, was es bedeutet, nach Tagen des Grauens noch am Leben zu sein.

Die Wurzel ist ein Symbol für das Leben an sich. Sie ist also nicht nur ein Überrest, sie ist eine Hoffnung, eine Verheißung – auf immerwährenden Austrieb neuen Daseins.

Die Farbe Weiß fungiert dabei als zusätzlicher Hoffnungsträger. Als Summe aller Farben des Lichts steht auch sie für ein gemeinschaftliches Alles. Zugleich steht das Weiß für innere Reinheit und Helligkeit, für den Neuanfang, die Unschuld, das Gute und das Glück, für das Wissen und die Wahrheit, für Neutralität, für Heilung und Erleuchtung, für die Abwesenheit von Kampf, für die Erklärung von Frieden. Das Weiß, als Licht, stellt sich der Düsternis entgegen, macht Verborgenes sichtbar.

Die Wurzel ist ein Sinnbild für die Zukunft, die Herkunft braucht. Es ist ein Sinnbild dafür, dass kein Mensch eine Insel ist. Dass wir alle gemeinsame Wurzeln haben. Dass gemeinsame Wurzeln bedeuten: Unteilbares Miteinander. Dass Leben, und Überleben, nur als Gemeinschaft möglich ist. Dass es diese Wurzeln wieder neu zu erspüren gilt.

White root ist eine Wurzel unter vielen. Überall stoßen wir auf Wurzeln. Physisch, gedanklich. Die anderer, unsere eigenen.

Die Wurzel ist eine Installation gegen das Gegeneinander. Gegen Zustände, die Menschen haltlos werden lassen, angstvoll, hoffnungsleer. Aber sie ist nicht nur eine Installation gegen ein Gegeneinander von einst, das auch ein Gegeneinander von Menschen gemeinsamer Wurzeln war.

Die Wurzel ist auch ein Bild der Gegenwart, der Zukunft. Denn auch heute sind Menschen haltlos, angstvoll, hoffnungsleer. Wissen nicht weiter. Durch Corona.

White root zeigt: Die Folgen des Terrors der Rechten von einst sind nicht vergessen. Und der Terror der Rechten von heute, die Corona als Nährboden ihrer Demagogie sehen, bleibt nicht unverfolgt.

Das ist auch deshalb so wichtig, weil das eigentliche Problem erst in der Nach-Corona-Zeit beginnt. Die Folgen von Corona, die mittel- und langfristigen gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen, die sich schon heute abzeichnen, werden nicht zuletzt unsere politische Kultur verändern. Nach Corona wird es Leidtragende geben, Verlierer die kein Netz auffängt, und die Rechten von heute könnten sie an sich ziehen, wodurch der einen Katastrophe die nächste folgt. Das gilt es zu verhindern. Umso wichtiger sind Zeichen gesamtgesellschaftlicher Hoffnung.

Volker-Johannes Trieb hat für den Zyklus „Not then, not now, not ever!“ viel mit Holz aus Hirtzbach, Elsass, Frankreich, gearbeitet, geschossverwundet im Ersten Weltkrieg. Hirtzbach-Holz war es auch, durch das er mit Benedikt Bösel ins Gespräch kam, dem Geschäftsführer des Schloßguts Alt Madlitz – bei einem Besuch in Triebs Atelier erzählte Bösel von den Eichen der Seelower Höhen – White root war geboren.

White root ist eine Guerilla-Aktion. Deshalb gibt es für sie auch alternative Standorte, wenn das Brandenburger Tor sich ihr als Standort verweigert. Welche das sind, und ob sie gebraucht werden, wird sich zeigen...

At 5 o'clock on 8th May 2020, Volker-Johannes Trieb placed a temporary Art- Installation „White root“ from his cycle „Not then, not now, not ever!“ in front of the Brandenburger Tor.

The display consists of a white-coloured, sprayed root from a 211 year old oak, floating on a steel frame with two text tapes, 50 mts and 18 mts long, with red lettering on a white background.

The 18 mt long tape carries the inscription „We want to start to believe in life once again“, a quote from the anti-war author Erich Maria Remarque. The 50 mt tape carries the inscription „These roots should not be an accusation or a confession. It should only be an attempt to inform of a generation, destroyed by war – even when it escaped its grenades.“ A quote in modification of the preface to Remarque novel “All Quiet on the Western Front”.

The root is laid in memory of May 8th, 1945, the „Day of the liberation“ from National Socialism 75 years ago. The memory 2020 will be the day of the global Covid-19 crisis. White root shows: The memory of the Liberation Day and our society's reaction to Corona shows thematic parallels.

A warning of peace.

The root comes from the Seelower Heights – from the Alt Madlitz castle estate where it was recovered in November 2019.

The oak stood on the battlefield of the Battle of the Seelower Heights in April 1945, the start position of the final advance of the Red Army on Berlin. It is a contemporary witness, shot and wounded. If it had a voice it could say what it means to still be alive after days of horror.

People need pictures.
White root becomes an image in the empty square in front of the Brandenburger Tor.

The root is a symbol of life itself. So it is not just a remnant, it is a hope, a promise - of constant sprouting of new existence.

The colour white acts as an additional beacon of hope. And the total of all colours of light also stands for a communal everything. At the same time, white stands for inner pureness and brightness, for the new beginning, the innocence, the good and the luck, for knowledge and truth, for neutrality, for healing and enlightenment, for the absence of struggle, for the explanation of peace. White, as light, opposes the gloom, makes hidden things visible.

The root is a symbol for the future that needs origins. It is a symbol for the fact that nobody is an island. That we all have common roots. That common roots mean: Indivisible togetherness. That life, and survival, is possible only as a community. That it can feel these roots again.

White root is one root amongst many. We come across roots everywhere. Physically, mentally. Others, our own.

The root is an installation against being against each other. Against conditions that make people baseless, fearful, hopeless. But it is not just an installation against being against each other, but also, against being against each other in spite of having common roots.

The root is also a picture of the present, the future. Because even today people are baseless, fearful, hopeless. Do not know how to continue. Due to Corona.

White root shows: The consequences of the terror of the right-wing from the past are not forgotten. And the terror of the right-wing today, the Corona seen as the breeding ground of its demagogy, does not go unchecked.

This is also important because the real problem begins in the post-corona period. The consequences of Corona, the middle and long-term social upheavals that are happening today will not least change our political culture. According to Corona, there will be victims, losers who have no network areas, and today's right-wingers could pull them in, whereby one catastrophe follows the next. It needs to be prevented. All the more important for signs of a hopeful society as a whole.

For “Not then, not now, not ever! “Volker-Johannes Trieb worked a lot with wood from Hirtzbach, Alsace, France, bullet wounded in the First World War. It was also Hirtzbach wood through which he got into conversation with Benedikt Bösel, the managing director of the Alt Madlitz estate - when visiting Trieb's studio Bösel told of the oak trees of the Seelower Höhen - White root was born.

White root is a guerrilla action. That's why there are alternative locations for it if the Brandenburger Tor location is denied. Where they are and whether they are needed it will show...
